6 Easy Ways to Winterize Your New Home

You've just moved into your new home and the temperature outside is beginning to drop. Take these measures to make sure your home stays comfortable through the winter season.

1. Reverse ceiling fans

Most people turn on the fan to cool down but many ceiling fans have a switch that will reverse the direction of the blades. Ceiling fans rotating counter-clockwise produces a cool breeze and a clockwise rotation produces a warm breeze. Since warm air rises, the air pooled at the top of the ceiling is circulated back into the living space.

2. Wrap your pipes

By wrapping your pipes you can decrease the chance of your pipes freezing as the temperature drops. If your pipes are warm to the touch, they are good candidates for insulation. You can find pre-slit pipe foam at most hardware stores. Cut it to size and fasten it in place with duct tape.

3. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Homes fires rise as furnaces go into overtime keeping homes warm as the temperatures drop. It is always important to verify that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly - keep back-up batteries readily available.

4. Check out your Chimney

Having a fireplace comes in handy during the winter months, even in Texas. Make sure your chimney is clean and free of critters before using it this winter.

5. Clean your gutters

As the season changes, the leaves begin to fall - into your gutters. To keep your gutters in ample condition, take the time to clear them of leaves and debris before it gets too cold to spend time outside.

6. Mind the Thermostat

Turning the temperature down while you are out and about can help save on your electric bill. Before you leave, make it a point to check the thermostat and turn it down a few degrees. For every degree you turn your thermostat down, you can save 1-3% of your heating bill. Better yet - turn your thermostat down through the Savant app on your phone. Savant Home Automation comes standard in all Lillian Custom Homes.
